The Acolyte is the latest entry in the Star Wars saga, taking place roughly a hundred years before the first installment in the prequel trilogy. Set during the last days of the High Republic era, the series created by Leslye Headland revolves around a Jedi Master’s investigation of a series of Jedi deaths.

During an interview, Headland spoke with Dave Filoni about crafting the central characters in the new series. At the same time, she compared the Jedi Padawan character Jecki Lon to Ahsoka Tano, one of the most popular characters in the franchise, first introduced during the Clone Wars animated series. Here is what Headland had to say about the similarities between Jecki and Ahsoka.

Introduced in the 2008 animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Ahsoka Tano has grown to become an integral character in the franchise. And Dave Filoni, who is currently working on a second season of the Disney+ series Ahsoka, has recently revealed a key aspect the Star Wars creator George Lucas suggested about the character.

In a recent conversation with The Acolyte creator, Leslye Headland, Filoni revealed that Lucas had advised him to focus on Ahsoka’s inherent capability and avoid depicting her as overwhelmed during her arc in The Clone Wars.
George Lucas’ Suggestion For Ahsoka Tano’s The Clone Wars Arc
Played by Rosario Dawson in the franchise, Ahsoka Tano has emerged as one of the most formidable Jedi, confronting adversaries like Darth Maul and Darth Vader. This depiction also underscores her training under Anakin Skywalker and her innate strength in the Force.

May The Force be with the Star Wars director who deemed Anakin Skywalker ‘the greatest Jedi of all time.’
Filmmaker and screenwriter Dave Filoni sparked a fuse of controversy by claiming that the boldly impetuous Jedi who would later metamorphose into a malicious brute is “the greatest.” So, naturally, a frenzy of disbelief took over the entire fandom that was upended at the mere insinuation of such a thing.

While some fans crafted vehement yet calculated arguments to prove otherwise, others went straight for the jugular as they targeted Filoni instead.

George Lucas, the man who spawned the beloved Star Wars franchise, has always been marked as a visionary of supreme quality and his works speak on his behalf. While the original trilogy had dazzled the fans, making the creator forever synonymous with the series, his prequel trilogy became a mere laughing stock for the public.

The original trilogy resonated with the viewers over its stories, characters, and the unique visual effects featured in the film, but the prequel was more politically influenced and after creating Episode III- Revenge of the Sith, he felt that he should put an end to his galaxy far, far away.
Although one would think it was the audience reception that forced Lucas to end that was not the case as he opened up about his decision to MTV.

Love it or hate it, Rotten Tomatoes remains a key part of whether moviegoers decide to check out the latest releases in theaters. However, we've also seen those all-important percentage scores become every bit as important for TV shows, especially when there are so many options out there thanks to an endless list of streaming platforms.
In the case of the Star Wars franchise, recent years have seen Lucasfilm shift focus to prioritising exploring that Galaxy out on the small screen rather than the big one.

Lucasfilm's latest Star Wars series, The Acolyte, debuted on Disney+ earlier this week with a two-episode premiere, and a lot of people have tuned in for the first live-action Galaxy Far, Far Away adventure set in the High Republic Era.
Despite the usual backlash, The Acolyte was a big hit with critics (it currently sits at a most impressive 93% on Rotten Tomatoes) and the positive reviews appear to have convinced more than just Star Wars aficionados to give this one a go.
According to Disney+, The Acolyte is the most-watched series premiere of 2024, logging 4.8 million views within its first day of streaming (views are defined as total stream time divided by runtime). Disney+ did not report same-day viewership for the previous Star Wars show, Ahsoka, but did announce that it had reached 14 million views within its first five days on the platform.

In recent years, the number of series set in a galaxy far, far away has increased dramatically. The variety of genres, forms and topics is amazing: every viewer, not only fans of the series, can find something to their taste.
On the occasion of the release of The Acolyte, which has already received negative reviews from fans, we have chosen ten of the best projects that you can watch instead of the new series.
1. Star Wars: Visions, 2021-2023
The first non-canon series released after Disney bought Lucasfilm, Visions is The Animatrix of the Star Wars universe, an anthology of 18 shorts divided into two seasons. Each episode is done in a unique style and tells its own little story.
The producers gave the writers maximum creative freedom. As a result, Visions offers a completely different take on traditional Star Wars, and it looks great. The authors clearly prove that canonicity does...

Disney’s new Star Wars project, The Acolyte finally premiered on Disney+ on June 4, 2024, with two episodes, and the critics and fans will now finally be able to give their opinions on the talked-about series in the upcoming weeks. We have already reported on the polarized reactions from fans and critics and have analyzed the reasons behind that, which you can read about in our separate article. In short, we concluded that The Acolyte is not perfect, but that it is better than some other Star Wars shows and that it has a lot of potential, which means that the overwhelmingly negative fan reviews were – in most cases – examples of review bombings due to the series notoriously being labeled as “woke” some time ago.

“The Acolyte,” Disney+’s newest Star Wars series, reached 4.8 million views in its first day of availability. This marks the streamer’s biggest series premiere of 2024, according to Disney.
An exact first-day viewership total isn’t available for “Ahsoka,” the most recent Star Wars series, though Disney did report that it took five days to reach 14 million views. That comes out to an average of 2.8 million viewers per day — 2 million below the launch of “The Acolyte.” (Note: a “view” is calculated by dividing the number of hours each title is watched by its runtime.)
Variety critic Alison Herman likens “The Acolyte” to “Andor” and “The Last Jedi” for its “willingness to put its own spin on hallowed lore.” Additionally, her review noted that the series “propelled by plentiful action, much of it hand-to-hand combat heavily inflected with martial arts. The long-awaited Star Wars series The Acolyte premiered on Disney+ last night.
As expected, the show quickly became a trending topic across every social media platform.
What was less anticipated, however, was the backlash the show received from fans of the franchise.
The Acolyte has become the latest series to experience a major gap between the response it's received from critics and the reaction from its most outspoken viewers.
The series -- which stars Amandla Stenberg as twin sisters Osha and Mae Aniseya -- received a mostly favorable reaction from critics.
Raves have been few, but the show is currently certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with an 88% rating based on 69 reviews.
Unfortunately, the reaction from non-critics has been far less positive.
The series holds a 45% audience score based on ratings from more than 500 viewers.
"I don't even know what they are trying to accomplish with this show. It's dry and boring.

Here at FandomWire, we review the new Disney+ Star Wars saga The Acolyte. This article does not contain significant spoilers.
While many have openly complained that Disney has ruined Star Wars and Marvel franchises with event-streaming series, I’m not one of them as of late. In fact, with the magnetic and compelling Ahsoka that came out last year, they are on a roll with The Acolyte, a stunning and captivating new chapter in the Star Wars saga.
By the time the fourth episode brings the rising action that wrenches up the tension and suspense to new levels, you have numerous badass lightsaber battles, galactic battlefields, a jaw-dropping introduction to one of the series’ best new villains, and, of course, who doesn’t love a Jedi Wookiee who wields the Force like the back of their scruffy hands?
Not to mention the birth of female action heroines for which Disney does not get enough credit.

Following the first season of ‘Ahsoka’ which was relatively successful, it didn’t take long for the studio to renew the show for the season. Back in January, it was confirmed that Filoni was developing season 2 of the show.
One of the best parts of the first season was naturally the fact that Hayden Christensen reprised his role as Anakin Skywalker, giving a highly-welcomed dose of nostalgia.

Ahsoka included plenty of surprises for Star Wars fans, including Hayden Christensen's return as Anakin Skywalker. He appeared in the World Between Worlds (where we learned the Jedi was as conflicted as ever), as one of his former Padawan's training holograms later in the series, and eventually in the form of a Force Ghost.
In the show's final few minutes, the idea seemed to be that Anakin will serve as Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren's guide on Peridea when the show returns. Theories have since swirled about his and Ahsoka Tano's ties to the Mortis Gods.
As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, a rumour shared by @MyTimeToShineH claims to confirm plans for Anakin to appear in Ahsoka season 2, albeit in a much larger role this time. This news is bound to be welcomed, particularly as Star Wars fans have embraced Christensen since he reprised his role as Darth Vader in Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Starring in the final two prequels of George Lucas’ Star Wars films, Hayden Christensen’s portrayal of Anakin Skywalker/ Darth Vader was met with unparalleled excitement. However, some fans of the sci-fi film had a different reaction when the film was initially released because Christensen’s portrayal of the character was met with criticism. Ahsoka stars Rosario Dawson and Hayden Christensen sat down for an Emmys for Your Consideration conversation in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon, reflecting on the scenes between Ahsoka Tano and Anakin Skywalker in the show’s fifth episode, “Shadow Warrior.”
The episode serves as a reunion between Anakin and his former Padawan, as well as features a flashback to the World Between Worlds, with Ariana Greenblatt appearing as a younger version of Ahsoka. And after Christensen appeared in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series as his character’s Darth Vader side, this storyline brought him back as a Jedi.
At the event, he noted that creator Dave Filoni asked him if he knew about the World Between Worlds on their first phone call about the show, “and I said, ‘Yeah, I do.’ I was just instantly really excited because it just creatively opened us up a lot in terms of what we could do with the character.

Star Wars will be getting a new show next month called The Acolyte. The mystery thriller show is reportedly set before the events of the Star Wars films (even the prequels) and follows the murder of multiple Jedi Knights. Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland acts as the creator and showrunner of the Disney+ series.
While the show has been in the making for the past four years, it has reportedly cost Disney a lot of money. According to a new report, the eight-episode series cost the studio $180 million, which is a lot considering the show features none of the characters previously seen in the franchise. Even the Ewan McGregor starring Obi-Wan Kenobi had a budget of $90 million.

Committed to long-interconnected franchises can sometimes be a chore for the viewers, especially when something is as big as the MCU. It also doesn’t help when newcomers are required to know about the entries that came before to enjoy a new show or movie. One major example is Madness of Multiverse, as fans, who weren’t familiar with the Wanda Vision beforehand, had a hard time piecing it all together in the sequel to 2016’s Doctor Strange.
But Star Wars did combat this issue with Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka, as the showrunners succeeded in making it more accessible to fans, who had no knowledge about her history.

When the Emmy nominations are announced July 17, something will happen that hasn’t happened in 50 years: The nominees for best drama series will include only one previously nominated show, Netflix’s The Crown. I would love to be able to say that’s because there are so many great dramas out there and that TV Academy members are diligently watching them and championing different great ones this year. But the truth is, this field, historically among the strongest each season, now looks like a wasteland.
Such perennial nominees as HBO’s Succession and Westworld and AMC’s Better Call Saul have ended, along with second-tier contenders like Paramount+’s The Good Fight and Star Trek: Picard. Some ongoing, previously nominated shows were not back in time to be eligible, in some cases because of delays caused by the writers and actors strikes, including Netflix’s Stranger Things, Squid Game and Bodyguard; HBO/Max’s Euphoria,...

When George Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012 for more than $4 billion, it marked a major turning point in the movie industry. But, as Lucas himself says, some game-changing transitions within the business were already in full swing.
In an interview with Brut (via Screen Rant), George Lucas said that selling Lucasfilm all came down to the rise of streaming. “Streaming is really powerful, and it’s great, it’s really upped the movie business because the theatrical movie business… we could see the problems, and it was not good. So everybody was looking to save it, but nobody knew streaming would. And that’s when Netflix took off, and at that point, I said, ‘I don’t know what this is gonna be, there’s gonna be a giant transition in the business, I don’t know that much about it,’ and I sold the company, and I retired.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we reassess drama, now with “Shōgun.”
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and we went from having no clear frontrunner in the Best Drama Series category to what seems like a runway favorite. June is busting out all over, especially on streaming. Whether it’s hiding from the heat or taking a break from school and work, Disney+ and Hulu are here to satisfying your mid-year entertainment needs.

Since The Last Update
With the June 13 start of Emmy nominations voting just three weeks away, the race is beginning to come into focus.
The drama series competition, which was looking incredibly bleak (with only one past nominee even eligible for a nomination this season, Netflix’s The Crown), is suddenly getting exciting. FX announced that Shōgun, which was expected to be a one-off limited series, will, in fact, be getting additional seasons, making it a drama series — and the new frontrunner for that prize and several related categories. But Amazon, far from conceding the category, is making a big push for its breakout rookie show, Fallout, which has amassed a sizable fanbase and overtaken Mr. and Mrs. Smith on the streamer’s list of priorities. (On Tuesday, they called in the big guns by having showrunner Jonathan Nolan interviewed by his big brother Christopher in front of a massive crowd of voters.

‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ is an upcoming Disney+ TV series set in the expansive Star Wars universe. The project has been in discussion since 2019, following the premiere of ‘The Rise of Skywalker,’ when Leslye Headland, a devoted fan of the franchise, expressed her interest.

Set approximately 100 years before the events of ‘Episode I: The Phantom Menace,’ ‘The Acolyte’ delves into a lesser-explored period of the Star Wars timeline. Known as the Golden Age of the Jedi, this era signifies the peak of the Jedi Order’s power and influence.
Despite exploring relatively uncharted territory, promotional materials for the show have received mixed reviews, at best. Fans have criticized the focus on female characters, certain timeline details, and the inclusion of Sith. A recent controversy arose over the introduction of the lightwhip into the series.

Last Thursday, FX confirmed that its adaptation of James Clavell’s “Shōgun” will continue past its first season and thus compete as a drama series rather than a limited one at the upcoming Emmys. Since it had spent the preceding three weeks as Gold Derby’s predicted Best Limited Series winner and was expected to reap several acting nominations, every drama and limited race was shaken up by its reclassification – and the dust still has not settled.
Within 48 hours of the “Shōgun” shift, our 2,500+ Emmy predictors came to the consensus that it will be nominated for Best Drama Series and all of the corresponding main acting awards. Even lead actor Cosmo Jarvis and supporting actress Moeka Hoshi, who never quite managed to reach predicted nominee status before, quickly broke into our forecasted drama lineups. Jarvis and his seemingly more secure lead male costar, Hiroyuki Sanada, displaced both Tom Hiddleston (“Loki...

Ahsoka was a successful Star Wars show that received high viewership and critical acclaim. While the series enjoys a vast family fanbase, there are hardcore fans who believe that it couldn’t live up to the gritty storytelling of Andor. Ahsoka was written and produced as a sequel to the animated series, Star Wars Rebels, which appealed to the family audiences. However, the Diego Luna-led series appealed to a more mature audience.

Andor also received critical acclaim and several accolades, but it couldn’t find the viewership success of Ahsoka. However, fans expect these stats to improve once the second season of the series drops on Disney+.
