On Saturday night, Jake Gyllenhaal took the stage at Studio 8h to close out Saturday Night Live Season 49, and, clearly, he was having a blast. There really were no duds in the array of sketches, and Gyllenhaal was a key player in most of them, showing up every time with enough vim to be the constant centerpiece. Plus, the variety of sketches was vast, which meant Gyllenhaal also got to show off his many strengths as a performer, from his surprisingly strong singing voice to his clammy New York City accent impression and beyond. Here are some of the best moments of the episode. In his monologue, he went hard on the humble humor about the fact that he was hosting the Season 49 finale instead of Season 50. He also reminded everyone that he has a nice set of pipes with a rendition of Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road.

The Saturday Night Live tradition continues!
As in recent finale episodes, Michale Che and Colin Jost wrote each other’s jokes during the Weekend Update segment in this year’s Season 49 finale. The idea is “to give each other fun jokes, almost supportive jokes, that would never ruin our summer or career,” Jost explained. Though, of course, the exercise devolved into the most giggly affair as the two comedians read provocative lines that would otherwise be deemed tasteless.

Well, Saturday Night Live closed out its 49th season last night commendably pushing the boundaries of comedy invention, female-singer lingerie, and what used to be acceptable language on broadcast television.
Commendable, because much of the season finale was broad and funny and that ought to be the real measure of standards and practices for the longest-running sketch-comedy show in entertainment history.
If you’re funny, you ought to get to push all you want.
This was another in a recent string of SNL episodes that generated a good percentage of high-decibel laughs. And if anyone was unaware that it was the season finale and the season was the 49th, the host, Jake Gyllenhaal, got the message across with unfettered emphasis in his monologue, which featured a song parody about it being the “end of the road” for this season.

Michael Che wasn’t lying when he said that the woman he introduced as “Rabbi Jill” on this week’s Saturday Night Live is a real Rabbi.
In what’s become a tradition on SNL’s Weekend Update, Colin Jost and Michael Che participated in a “Joke Swap” for the show’s Season 49 finale, where the two comics read distasteful jokes the other has written for them, sight unseen. As part of the duo’s last Joke Swap in December 2023, Che brought out a woman he introduced as a civil rights leader before having Jost read a series of racist jokes. That woman, it turned out, was an actress.
Che admitted as much at the top of this week’s new Joke Swap. “Before we start, last time we did this I hired an actress to pretend to be a civil rights hero, and that was low.

We’re about due for a new live-action Scooby-Doo movie, and Jake Gyllenhaal and Sabrina Carpenter are happy to hop into the Mystery Machine.
On this week’s SNL, host Gyllenhaal and musical guest Carpenter co-starred in a Scooby-Doo video short as Fred and Daphne, with Mikey Day as Shaggy and Sarah Sherman as Velma, along with a CGI Scooby. The gang searched a spooky haunted house for “the Shadow Phantom,” capturing the villain after Scooby knocked a suit of armor onto him. In typical Scooby fashion, Fred tore off the Phantom’s mask to reveal (gasp!) Old Man Franklin.

During the sketch, Johnson as Trump spoke about his “weird and depressing” state at the courthouse, saying, “I don’t like being in court because they say very mean things about me as I’m trying to sleep.” (It was reported that Trump fell asleep in court during proceedings.) It’s the end of the road for Saturday Night Live’s 49th season — and host Jake Gyllenhaal has the perfect way to say goodbye.
During his monologue that kicked off this week’s season finale, Gyllenhaal started out with some thinly veiled complaints that he’s stuck hosting the Season 49 finale and not the landmark Season 50 premiere. (He missed it by that much!) But he was still honored to host an SNL season finale, and he decided to commemorate it with a song, grabbing the mike to croon a version of the classic Boyz II Men torch song “End of the Road.

Bravo’s “Vanderpump Rules” has long been one of unscripted television’s most formally adventurous series, with a cinematic grammar that constantly evolves to express the feelings and ideas at each season’s center. Last season, for example, editor Jesse Friedman explored the “Scandoval” situation in which longtime cast member Tom Sandoval cheated on his girlfriend Ariana Madix by telling the story in reverse — a technique that had more in common with the work of Christopher Nolan and Harold Pinter than with other shows in the world of reality TV, and one that provided the perfect visual corollary for Ariana and her friends’ piecing together of the narrative. For the Season 11 finale, Friedman once again took some audacious stylistic risks that paid off not only emotionally, but indicated how the show as a whole might be coming to the end of an era.

Food Network fixture Alex Guarnaschelli is back alongside fellow celebrity chef and host Gabe Bertaccini for another season of Ciao House. This time the picturesque southern Italian region of Puglia is the chosen destination for the competition. The show challenges a dozen culinary pros from various backgrounds to bring their A-game as they face cooking challenges and maneuver team dynamics. Adding to the pressure cooker situation is the fact these participants have to cohabitate in a 16th-century villa. Those who win challenges earn the opportunity to lead teams, but that could be a double-edged sword if you’re on the losing side. Guarnaschelli and Bertaccini have the arduous task of helping decide who truly masters Italian cooking techniques and honoring the culture, history, and traditions of the region. In the end, the winner will be named Capo di Casa and receive an immersive culinary education across the country, training with acclaimed Italian master chefs.

Squid Game fans eager to see the Netflix hit’s second season — due for release sometime in 2024 — can now pass the time with a similar series. The 8 Show, another South Korean thriller, hit Netflix on Friday. And though Squid Game is a hard act to follow, The 8 Show might just become viewers’ next obsession — and here’s why. 1. It’s another hard-hitting K-drama. Directed and written by Han Jae-rim, The 8 Show is “a slow-burn series that reveals just how vulnerable humans are to the darkest sides of a hyper-capitalist society,” Netflix’s Tudum blog reveals. Sound familiar, Squid Game fans? 2. It also follows money-hungry contestants navigating a dangerous game. The 8 Show’s synopsis lays out the new series’ Squid Game-like premise: “Eight individuals trapped in a mysterious 8-story building participate in a tempting but dangerous game show where they earn money as time passes.” Netflix 3. It’s a “uniform” series.

Following Dabney Coleman’s death, Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan is remembering the man he cast as John Dutton Sr. in the Paramount Network hit. “I had the opportunity to work with Dabney in 2003, and learned priceless lessons in the power of simplicity as an artist, but more importantly I witnessed Dabney’s humility, grace, and patience,” Sheridan told Deadline. Coleman and Sheridan’s filmographies show they crossed paths in “Back in the Ring,” a 2003 episode of the CBS drama The Guardian, in which the former starred as Burton Fallin, a lawyer, and the latter guest-starred as Tim Dohanic, boxer whom Burton helps. “I never forgot those lessons, and was humbled myself when he agreed to appear on Yellowstone,” Sheridan added, recalling Coleman’s guest-starring role on the Western series. “His performance was yet another lesson in bravery and emotional honesty. Dabney Coleman is a treasure. He will be missed and admired,...

Dearest readers: It’s Bridgerton Week at IndieWire. We’re celebrating the new season by diving deep on one of the best romance shows on TV.
The world of “Bridgerton” is no stranger to competition. Among London’s elite, wealthy debutantes and ambitious suitors vie for attention and supremacy on every level, from status and title to the very notion of a “diamond” — the best the season has to offer. What better way to celebrate the eagerly awaited Season 3 (Part 1 now streaming and Part 2 due June 13) than by revisiting past and previous diamonds?
Now that there are fully 20 of them out in the world, we decided to rank the best “Bridgerton” episodes, and to not overly favor any one season over another. A show doesn’t become an overnight popular horny period sensation without some certified bangers (pun intended), so we revisited Seasons 1 and 2 along with Season 3 – Part 1 to pull the greatest hits.

Morena Baccarin‘s Fire Country spinoff, Sheriff Country, may not be premiering until the 2025-2026 broadcast season, but that doesn’t mean you’ll have to wait until then to see more of Mickey Fox. “We’ll see more of Mickey and even maybe more people in her world in Fire Country Season 3, executive producer Tia Napolitano tells TV Insider. “She’s part of Edgewater, and we’re just expanding the Edgewater universe. So I think it’ll feel like coming home when you finally are able to tune into Sheriff Country, even though it’s in 2025.” Max Thieriot, Fire Country star, co-creator, executive producer, and director of the episode that introduced Mickey, agrees. “Before we get to launch Sheriff Country, I think there’s also a lot more to unpack with Mickey. Obviously we tried to really get out as much backstory as we possibly could in that episode,...

While “Bridgerton” is known for its steamy sex scenes, Season 3 lead star Nicola Coughlan asked for even more sultry moments onscreen.
The actress told Stylist (via Buzzfeed) that she wanted to be “very naked” for a particular scene in the latest Netflix season.
“I specifically asked for certain lines and moments to be included,” Coughlan said of working with intimacy coordinator Lizzy Talbot. “There’s one scene where I’m very naked on camera, and that was my idea, my choice. It just felt like the biggest ‘fuck you’ to all the conversation surrounding my body; it was amazingly empowering. I felt beautiful in the moment, and I thought, ‘When I’m 80, I want to look back on this and remember how fucking hot I looked!'”
She added of collaborating with Talbot, “You go, ‘Ok, what do I want to show? What don’t I want to show? What’s scripted,...

A new dream TV duo is upon us. Laura Dern and Margaret Qualley are set to co-star in the upcoming limited series Forever, Interrupted, which just landed at Netflix from production company A24. Per Deadline, they’ll also serve as co-executive producers.
Forever, Interrupted is based on the romance novel of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid, who’s also the author of Daisy Jones & the Six, which was adapted into a Prime Video limited series starring Riley Keough in 2023. Qualley will star as Elsie, who embarks on a whirlwind romance that leads to a supposedly idyllic marriage after just a few months. But when her husband unexpectedly dies, her path crosses with that of his mother Susan (Dern), who had no idea she even existed.

The Fugitive Task Force has something to celebrate in the FBI: Most Wanted Season 5 finale: Ray’s (Edwin Hodge) wedding! But it won’t be without at least a little drama. This season has seen Ray slowly taking steps with Cora (Caroline Harris), and now, in the May 21 episode, “Powderfinger,” it’s time for their big day. “It is a very lovely ceremony,” Hodge tells TV Insider. “You might see a little internal conflict with Ray in his decision-making when it comes to this new family of his and his job. I think you’re going to get a taste of what it’s like for Ray to actually have to make these decisions as a family man now. And the case married with this beautiful wedding, I think, will leave the audiences waiting for next season.” In talking to Cora about what’s going on, “he’s got to...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the Blue Bloods Season 14 Part 1 finale, “The Heart of a Saturday Night.”] Blue Bloods ended its Season 14 midseason finale on its usual positive note at the weekly Reagan family dinner. With Season 14 Part 1 now in the rearview mirror, showrunner Kevin Wade is giving a glimpse into what to expect in the final episodes set to premiere this fall on CBS, and he doesn’t think it’s likely that they’ll make Tom Selleck‘s Frank Reagan retire from his position as police commissioner. Some characters this season, like the mayor, have hinted at a desire for a new commissioner, raising questions about whether Frank is going to stay in the job that defines his life. Even when he has difficult days like in Season 14 Episode 10, which showed Frank and his father (Len Cariou) at uncomfortable odds over a deceased cop’s use of the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, Frank doesn’t...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the Mary & George finale, “War.”] Mary & George was always headed towards a deadly end. The excellent Starz period drama is based on Benjamin Woolley’s non-fiction book The King’s Assassin: The Fatal Affair of George Villiers and James I. The title alone should tell you everything you need to know. But even if you did know how Mary & George could end thanks to history, it didn’t make the violent conclusion any less tragic, and the creators took a creative liberty with how one character was killed that kept viewers on their toes. The King’s Assassin explores the evidence that George Villiers, the Duke of Buckingham and longtime lover of the Scottish King James I (successor of Queen Elizabeth I), actually murdered the monarch instead of the king dying peacefully in his bed. Rumors immediately surrounded the largely disliked George saying that he poisoned the king and that ...

A future with Gabriela (Stephanie Arcila), unfortunately, doesn’t seem to be in the (immediate) cards: She’s about to marry Diego (Rafael de la Fuente) as the season ends. Firefighting is going to take time, but to him, it’s the first healthy addiction he’s had in his life, so he goes to Luke (Michael Trucco) in the final moments to pull strings to get him back to that. Below, Thieriot breaks down the finale and teases what’s ahead in Season 3. Talk about getting into the mindset of a Bode who’s out, going to Smokey’s, making plans, figuring out his life, no longer wearing that orange…...

To say Marvel fans have enjoyed the first season “X-Men ’97” — the continuation of the beloved animated series from the 1990s, widely credited for laying the foundation for the explosion of superhero cinema in the 2000s and 2010s — is a bit like saying Wolverine has a bit of an anger issue. Netflix’s rom-com “Mother of the Bride” and Will Forte crime drama series “Bodkin” led the Luminate streaming originals chart for the week of May 10-16, elbowing past higher-profile competition.
Two buzzy streaming original movies — Netflix’s “Unfrosted” and Amazon Prime Video’s “The Idea of You” — held up well in their second full week in release. The Jake Gyllenhaal starrer “Road House” continues to be a work horse for Prime Video, which confirmed earlier this week that a second installment is in development. A surprise on the original film chart was Netflix documentary “Living with Leopards,” which debuted at No.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Doctor Who Season 1 Episode 3 “Boom.”] Welcome back to Doctor Who, Steven Moffat! The former showrunner wrote the latest episode, which puts the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Ruby (Millie Gibson) in the middle of a battlefield, with a few twists along the way. The one that will have everyone buzzing first is obviously the casting for one of the Anglican Marines (just one of several nods to Moffat’s Doctor Who past): Varada Sethu—who’s joining the series in Season 2 as a new companion—as Mundy. Moffat, understandably, is mum when it comes to even hinting at what’s ahead for Sethu on Doctor Who. “[Showrunner] Russell [T Davies] has a plan, and I don’t know what the exact details of his release of that plan are going to be,” he tells TV Insider. “I simply wrote the character of Mundy, and she did what she had to do in the story.
